Virginia Supreme Court blocks Democrat-drawn congressional map
SUMMARY
The Virginia Supreme Court has blocked a new Democratic congressional map intended to gain up to four new House seats. The court ruled that Democrats failed to follow procedural requirements for placing a constitutional amendment on the ballot. They concluded the amendment process started too late, making the referendum vote invalid. The ruling gives Republicans an advantage ahead of the midterm elections. Previously, Virginia voters narrowly approved the redistricting plan, but Republicans argued it was not lawful due to timing. The midterms will now occur under the current congressional map, with Democrats holding six of 11 districts.
