CARBON CREDITS
SUMMARY

Rwanda is partnering with a Chinese-backed company, Climate Bridge Group, to sell carbon credits to Singapore. A carbon credit represents one ton of carbon dioxide either removed from the atmosphere or prevented from being emitted.

Rwanda, which emits about 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, will identify and develop projects with Climate Bridge Group to generate these credits. Singapore, emitting around 49 million tons of carbon dioxide yearly (making it the 57th-largest emitter globally), will buy these credits to offset its emissions and meet climate goals under the Paris Agreement’s Article 6.2, which allows countries to trade carbon credits.
