Israel recognizes Armenian genocide

SUMMARY

Israel's government has officially recognized the Armenian genocide, a decision expected to strain relations with Turkey. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar stated, "It's never too late to do the right thing," and emphasized the importance of recognizing this historical atrocity, which claimed 1.5 million lives.

Israel had previously avoided using the term "genocide" to describe the events during World War I due to diplomatic considerations. This recognition aligns Israel with 32 countries acknowledging the genocide amidst long-standing tensions with Turkey, which contests the allegations.

Prime Minister Netanyahu supported the recognition but declined to address concerns regarding Turkey's reaction.
