France temporarily shuts down three nuclear reactors over heatwave and climate change regulations
SUMMARY
France has temporarily shut down three nuclear reactors and reduced power at eight others to comply with environmental regulations amid a heatwave. The EDF energy group stated that this decision helps avoid discharging excessively warm water into already heated rivers. The reactors affected are located at the Golfech, Bugey, and Chooz plants.
The heatwave has impacted over 25 million people, with temperatures reaching up to 41C. This is the third heatwave since May, leading to early closures of tourist hotspots and increased incidences of wildfires. The heat has also highlighted infrastructure vulnerabilities attributed to climate change regulations.
