Polish capital registers first gay marriage

SUMMARY

Warsaw has registered its first same-sex marriage, following court rulings requiring the recognition of such marriages registered abroad. The European Union’s highest court ordered Poland to register same-sex marriages from other EU nations despite Polish law not permitting them.

Warsaw Mayor Rafa? Trzaskowski announced the issuance of a marriage certificate for a same-sex couple in line with these rulings.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed an apology to LGBTQ+ individuals for past mistreatment and committed to implementing the rulings swiftly. Although same-sex marriage remains illegal in Poland, Tusk's government aims to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples.
